Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR) Testing for Infants
At HearBright, the Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR) is done without the use of sedatives. Instead, we use natural sleep to obtain measurement of the brain's response to sounds. If your infant does not pass the newborn hearing screening at the hospital, he or she is referred for ABR testing. The ABR is used in place of the standard “hearing test” for infants or children who cannot give verbal or behavioral responses to sounds they hear, and the results are indicative of the sensitivity of the auditory system to sounds. The ABR uses small stickers that are placed on the skin of the head to obtain electrical responses, and earphones that are placed in each ear. The infant must remain sleeping for the duration of the test. When the infant is old enough, behavioral testing is performed to verify the results. The ABR must be accompanied by high frequency tympanometry for infants, and Distortion Product Otoacoustic Emissions (DPOAE) testing, during which the infant can be awake or asleep.
The inner ear contains not only the organ of hearing, but also the organ which provides us with balance. When you experience dizziness, it is described as either a sense of imbalance, or episodes of vertigo. When your physician refers you for balance assessment, the group of tests is called Videonystagmography (VNG). The purpose of the VNG is to differentiate the possible causes of your imbalance or vertigo. The results will indicate involvement of the peripheral system (ears), or central system. After the results are received, your physician can determine your next step of treatment.

When you join the battery club, you can walk in or have a friend or family member pick up batteries for you. Just give your name at the front counter, and our computer record will show your quantity balance for the year and the type of battery you use. HearBright's batteries are always fresh!

Bluetooth Hearing Aids
Bluetooth-enabled hearing aids can be wirelessly connected to devices such as televisions, cell phones, FM systems, GPS systems, and PDAs, with the use of Bluetooth technology. Bluetooth technology works similarly to wireless Internet, where sounds are sent through an invisible electronic signal.

Tinnitus may have several underlying causes. Your doctor may begin investigating the condition by first finding out what kind of tinnitus you suffer from. There are two general types of tinnitus: subjective and objective tinnitus.

Do you have an occasional buildup of wax in your ears? Wax can block the ear canal, causing a sudden hearing loss, or it can interfere with the use of your hearing aids or your hearing enhancers. At HearBright, we check your ears for wax at every visit. If wax buildup is excessive, we have gentle water flush systems and tools to carefully remove the wax. HearBright will not be able to remove the wax from your ears if you have an ongoing medical condition of the outer ear, any current ear pain, or deeply embedded wax.
Counseling on the use and care of your hearing aids
Did you know that hearing aids and hearing enhancers need daily care? It's a simple routine of wiping the device, checking for debris, and keeping them in a clean, dry environment. We review the steps with you and provide you with tools to use. And with our specialized equipment for dehumidification, we maximize the life of your devices for many years of enjoyment.
Diagnostic Audiologic Evaluations
An annual check of your hearing is recommended. Without the annual checkup, you may not be aware of a decline of your thresholds, but others will be able to tell. To avoid being “the last to know” about any decline of your hearing, get tested every year. At HearBright, we first check for any medical condition that could affect your hearing. Ear infections, middle ear conditions, and even ear wax should be ruled out first. After the evaluation, you will review the results with your audiologist at HearBright.
Using specialized materials and tools for this purpose, we can take the shape of your ear canals. The impressions are used to producing musician's earplugs, swim plugs, or custom hearing aids.
Evaluation and demonstration of Assistive Listening Devices (ALDs) including FM systems, Alarm Clocks, TV and Phone Amplifiers
Assistive listening devices are devices that can help a listener function better in day-to-day communication situations. ALDs can be used with or without hearing aids to make hearing easier, which can reduce the overall stress and fatigue of listening. ALDs can be used in the home to make alarms, the television and telephone more audible. They can also be connected to personal hearing aids for better listening in noisy environments.
Evaluation and Fitting for Musician's Ear Plugs
Musician's ear plugs are custom-made and come with a filter. The filter allows the user to hear sounds undistorted but at an attenuated level. This way, the musician can still judge sounds and understand conversations. The musician's ear plugs must be replaced periodically if the user has a weight change or the ear shape changes with age.
Hearing Enhancers and hearing aids need to be specially fitted for the individual user. Although it may sound simple to obtain a pair of hearing devices and use them, there is much skill and expertise involved. The correct and appropriate model must be chosen for the individual based on needs, lifestyle, budget. This decision is made based upon the manufacturer's speciality, sound quality, and performance. For example, an individual with a sensitive auditory system and a relaxed lifestyle will have a different set of needs from the individual who has high demands on their auditory system and lives a busy lifestyle. The knowledge of the audiologist regarding the different manufacturers is very important. This is the reason that our audiologists receive continual training and education, as well as hands-on experience with hearing devices. The knowledge, education, and research of the audiologist can mean the difference between the user thoroughly enjoying the hearing devices, or not being able to wear them comfortably.
At HearBright, the follow-up includes fine tuning of the hearing aids using Real Ear Meausrement (REM) or Speech Mapping. These precise measurements will display on a graph and will allow your audiologist to make fine adjustments of the sound depending upon the size and shape of your individual ear canal. During follow up care, we also address maintenance and cleaning, check your ear canals for any wax buildup, clean out wax as needed. Every six months, we perform a deep cleaning of the aids, change parts, and make adjustments.
Getting Hearing Aids
Getting hearing aids or enhancers is a life-changing decision! Our job is to do the necessary research to find the best quality sound, the most reliable and best hearing aid manufacturers, and the specialty of that manufacturer, and match it to your needs. Remember, the most expensive ones may not be for you if you have no need for the advanced features. For example, some manufacturers specialize in hearing aids for infants and children, and some specialize in high power hearing aids. Other manufactures excel in hearing fine details of environmental sounds, while others specialize in providing the nuances of conversational speech. Manufacturers also differ in making small custom aids, or rechargeable aids. At HearBright, we are independently owned and operated, which means we have the ability to provide different models without being restricted by a hidden business agenda or contract like retail or chain stores.

Your ears are carefully measured and the appropriate parts are selected. At the fitting appointment, you will receive instructions on the use and care of the hearing aids, and be scheduled to return for check ups.
Hearing Aid Repairs
At HearBright, we welcome you to walk in with your aids. Hearing aid repairs are done at our fully stocked lab while you wait, and parts can be replaced with brand new parts. In addition, specialized equipment is used to dehumidify and clean the aids. Hearing aids also come with a full warranty which allows for factory repairs when necessary and replacements under the Loss and Damage warranty.
Hearing Aid Evaluation and Selection
As you probably know, there is a massive amount of information for the consumer about hearing aids. It is our job at HearBright to know the products that are on the market. Knowing the products takes constant education, research, and training. In addition, we must be knowledgeable about which manufacturers are reliable and produce quality product. You can count on HearBright to test out the hearing aids before any recommendation is made.
Hearing Evaluations for Children
Pediatricians in our medical communities depend on HearBright to test the hearing of children. From newborns to toddlers, we have special test equipment such as high frequency tympanometry, visual reinforcement audiometry equipment, and play audiometry tools. Most importantly, our audiologists have special skills and knowledge of test techniques and interpretation of results.
In Office Services
Our clinics are fully stocked to perform a wide variety of in-office services for your hearing aids. Hearing aids have tiny electronic parts like speakers and wires. These parts are oftentimes modular, and can be replaced while you wait. Our in-office services include repairs, cleanings, and checks of hearing aids.
Live Speech Mapping
Your hearing aid adjustment isdependent not only on your hearing thresholds, but the anatomy of your ear canal. Live Speech Mapping provides a precise visual display of the interaction of the hearing aid, your ear canal, and the incoming voice. Fine tune adjustments can be made based upon the findings, and the display provides verification that the hearing aids are working optimally.
Newborn Audiological Evaluations
Newborns hearing tests are very different from the testing of older children or adults. For obvious reasons babys can not respond to either instruction or presented subjective testing. For this reason a suite of objective testing is used for newborns.
Newborn Hearing Screenings
All hospitals in the State of California perform a hearing screening shortly after the birth of the newborn. If your baby did not receive a hearing screening, you can request it at HearBright. The screening is a “pass” or “fail,” and equipment includes the Distortion Product Otoacoustic Emissions and Auditory Brainstem Response tools.
Distortion ProductOtoacoustic emission testing is a vital component of the audiologic evaluation. By sending signals to the inner ear, the system measures the response of the outer hair cells inside of the cochlea. The system records the responses at frequencies between 1000Hz or 1500Hz to 8000Hz or 12000Hz, depending on the purposes of the test. The results are displayed on a graph, and are used toward analyzing the origin of any hearing loss.
These tests are performed in a sound proof room, called a sound booth. The goal of a pediatric hearing test is to obtain information regarding hearing levels from children who are unable to respond in the same manner that older children and adults respond.
Test & Audiometry
Audiometry refers to the presentation of calibrated pure tones to the individual ear, and obtaining the threshold. The patient responds by pushing a button, and stops responding whenever the pure tone is no longer audible. This test determines the pattern of thresholds for each ear, and is important in determining the type of hearing loss.
Tinnitus Evaluation and Management
Tinnitus is the presence of any sound in the ear which is not originating in the environment. This can present as a buzzing, roaring, sizzling, ringing, or a fluctuating multi-tone sound. Tinnitus is documented in the clinic by matching the individual?s tinnitus to the closest similar sound from the equipment. In this manner the primary pitch of the tinnitus as well as the loudness of the tinnitus is documented. The information that is obtained from the evaluation is then utilized during treatment. Treatment is oftentimes in the form of stimuli that is presented in the ear, under control by the user. The stimuli can be fractal tones similar to music, clinically shown to reduce the effects of tinnitus, or broad band sounds designed to provide relief of the tinnitus. Different manufacturers specialize in the delivering the stimuli.
During tympanometry, an airtight seal in the opening of the ear canal is created using a probe tip. Air pressure is then adjusted and the response of the ear drum is measured. This test shows us whether or not the ear drum is functioning with normal range. A variety of middle ear disorders can be considered when there is abnormal movement of the ear drum, such as ossicular discontinuity or effusion.
VNG - Balance Evaluations
Videonystagmography (VNG) is the use of a camera recording a video of eye movements during balance testing. When the balance system is not functioning normally, there is often nystagmus present. Nystagmus describes the rapid movement of the eye in response to certain physical positions or stimuli. When we document the nystagmus, the information points the way toward the cause of the dizziness. This is useful for your physician to determine the next step in your treatment.
